Climate-smart marine spatial planning (CSMSP) in the UKOTs

Climate-smart approaches to marine spatial planning are starting to emerge across the globe. Working with leading CSMSP technical experts, UKOT representatives, UKOTA and UK government agencies, we have consulted widely to understand potential enablers of climate-smart approaches to marine spatial planning in the UKOTs, and the wider relevance of the CSMSP process to UKOTs that manage their marine environment through different mechanisms.

"Climate change is having significant impacts on UKOTs and is projected to do so well into the future.
This roadmap is an ideal resource to support long-term planning for the marine environment so UKOTs can both adapt and maximise opportunities to create resilience."

Building on the MCCIP climate change assessment across the UKOTs, MCCIP has explored the potential use of climate-smart marine spatial planning with the UKOTs. Initial awareness raising activities were followed by a consultation exercise, collaborative workshops, and case study focus group sessions with Anguilla and Turks and Caicos.

The package of outputs include an introduction to CSMSP for the UKOTs, consultation findings, and the UKOTs CSMSP roadmap illustrated with the case study examples.
